Throw the R away…

"Daddy, does this mean we have an R next to our name?" asked my ten-year-old daughter Nell on the walk to school, after my midnight return from a long day's journey into nightmares at Wigan. We bought a paper to confirm the horrible fact.

"At least the R won't be there next season, unless we go down to League One," I said hopefully.

At the start of the season Nell asked: "Why did we appoint a manager who got his team relegated?" And in that judgement she was more astute than Sullivan and Gold.

Still, her sister Lola says we'll win more games in a different league and Nell's made me a card reading: "Dear Daddy, I am very sorry to hear that West Ham United FC (the best team in the whole wide universe) are going down and bottom. When I grow up they will rule the world, Love Nell."

Maybe she'll be manager one day and we'll never see the R word again...

Commiserations. Looking in from the outside it seems to me that your board has a lot to answer for.

I am still trying to fathom out how a team with so many quality players can conjure up relegation. I haven’t spoken to Nigel yet – I imagine he’s feeling a little raw at the moment.

We will find out next weekend if we are joining you.

The optimism of youth....I'm not sure we'll be winning any games by Infinity to Nil next season.

I hope Wolves stay up - proper club, proper fans - along with Blackpool. I definitely want Birmingham to go down, with either Wigan or Blackburn. Should be an exciting afternoon, although not at the Boleyn.

Yes, I would love Birmingham to go down after their nutters attacked us in the Carling Cup away leg. Would like to see Blackpool stay up though and probably Wigan go down as they can't fill their stadium. Though Martinez is a decent manager who can make effective substitutions as we know to our cost...

And thanks for the commiserations Adrian...
