Snatching defeat from victory

Oh Monday, Monday... Now is the time for Big Sam to prove that he can instill some professionalism in to the side. Playing well and not even coming out of it with a 0-0 draw has the hallmarks of the Roeder and Grant relegation sides. It's surely about mental toughness as much as anything.

Some goals would help too. Sears has yet to prove himself as a scorer so we should stick Cole or Carew up front with Freddie. A midfield of Noble, Parker, Nolan and Taylor should be the best in the league - we just need to prove it at Doncaster, a match which will shape our season.

Twenty-six years ago, Everton lost the first two matches of the season and won the Title with five games to go.

Thirty one years ago West Ham lost 2-1 at home to Luton, Paul Goddard making his debut, on the opening day, didnt lose again until Christmas, were promoted in March and Champions in early April.

Yes, good teams can overcome bad starts. Man United had a poor start and lost to Burnley two seasons ago only to win the title.
But are we that good? With 45 games to go anything can happen, though last season's initial four defeats set the tone for the season. Let's hope we're more like the Bonzo-inspired side of 1981...

Putting a home defeat into some sort of perspective, you may have caught up with the riots that have wrecked parts of London, and other cities, and caused our League Cup game to be postponed, along with the England-Holland game.

Still unclear if Saturday's game will be on, but it does seem to be quietening down a bit. We have re-signed Linda McCartney on loan for the season, which suggests Big Sam was not over impressed with the way Herita cost us the Cardiff match.

Upson has signed for Stoke, becoming their 15th centre back, Scotty and Carlton are still at the Club....

McCartney a good signing on evidence of his time under Curbs. Riots reminded me of Sep 11 when DC still made Reading v west Ham to see us lose on pens. Had the Aldershot game been on he would have braved the mobs to arrive no later than normal. And so would The Gav who survived the Millwall riot...
