If West Ham can get £6.5 million from Middlesbrough for Ashley Fletcher then it's a great piece of business. That's £1.5 million more than Enner Valencia went for, who was an experienced international and World Cup star. Fletcher is a promising youngster and didn't really get enough chances last season when he could have replaced Jonathan Calleri. But even so, when he did come on late in games he didn't take the chances that came his way, such as his late dink wide against Spurs.
He only started in two league games and scored one goal in the League Cup against Man United, though he had proved he could score regularly for Barnsley the previous season in League One. But even so, I'd say he's a £1.5 to £2million million player on current stats, not a £6.5 million player. Garry Monk presumably remembers that Fletcher was a promising youth player at Man United and is now taking a massive punt. Prices really are going crazy, with Swansea asking for £50 million for Sigurdsson, fine player that he is — it's almost as if they're being set by our old midfielder Shaun Newton after a year of celebrating his birthday…

I think we have to stop thinking like a small, selling club where we're just interested in the price we can get for players. We need a change of mentality if we're going to be a 60000-stadium top 6 club. The market is what it is, and if Kevin Stewart is worth £8 million, so is Fletcher. But the point is about our squad. We've shipped out 3 strikers over the summer and brought in just one, Hernandez (Arnautovic is the new Payet). Given that Sakho and Carroll are always injured, we've left ourselves with just one fit senior striker. That £7 million in our bank account won't help us when CH14 gets hurt, and we're playing Masuaki as an emergency forward.
Perhaps Martinez will get a try out? I couldn't really see Fletcher making it as a top striker on last season's form so I do think it's worth taking the money, but as you say, we need more than one striker unless AC defies all expectations and stays fit. For £6.5 million plus the £5m for Valencia there should be a decent reserve striker going somewhere in Europe or the lower leagues and Bilic clearly didn't rate Fletcher or would have played him more last season. Having said that, he'll probably go on to become a world beater!
Plus we do have £20m Ayew if he counts as a striker…
