Carroll gamble?
Big Sam says he is prepared to take a "calculated gamble" by putting Andy Carroll and his Jesus beard on the subs bench at Cardiff. What could possibly go wrong? Well, quite a lot. We might be in the bottom two with Allardyce's job in danger, but we surely need to give Carroll another week or two to ensure we don't rush his comeback and cause him to break down again. It doesn't smack of a scientific approach to football, more an act of desperation. If it's any sort of "gamble" then it's too soon. Yes, we need AC back, but there may well be a giant new striker on the way next week if he gets a work permit which will lessen the pressure on Carroll to return. Get this wrong and Carroll could miss most of the season.
